Adventures of a Cake Diva

A Blog About Adventures in Baking and Cake Decorating

Hello, and Welcome to My Cake World! 09/05/2011

As I lounged on the sofa this morning, drinking my coffee, watching the Pilot of “New Girl” (Fox On Demand), and surfing some of my favorite cake blogs, it occurred to me that it just might be fun to have a blog of my own.  I must admit that the thought of having my own blog for fun is a little daunting, though.  Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a technologically challenged, to say the least.  (Five laptops in the past five years. ‘Nuff said.)  In fact, I originally started this blog on Blogger, but I could not figure out how to move the header from the side to the top center, and I couldn’t stand how it looked.  So, instead of wasting a minute longer trying to figure out how to fix it, I just created a WordPress account and marched forward.  So, it is entirely possible that this will be my one and only post, because I am convinced that I will not be able to figure out how to make another post.  We shall see.  But, I digress…

Another reason that I decided to create this blog is that I love all things caking—from finding/creating/testing new recipes to learning new decorating techniques, and from showing off the cakes that I have made to understanding the science behind the cake.  My friends and family have indulged me in my cake obsession, for which I am grateful. (What’s the point of getting jazzed about something if you can’t share it with someone?)  One final reason that I think that I decided to blog is that I made a wedding cake and groom’s cake this weekend, which both turned out quite lovely, but I do not know when I will be baking my next cake.  I am experiencing a bit of a let-down. (Background: I recently closed my caking business and relocated out of state to be closer to family.)  Maybe blogging about cakes will be a way to fill this void. (I’m not kidding–there really is a void.)  But, I am kinda excited to figure out what I will post about next.  Stay tuned!

  1. […] write about my caking adventures in a way that would connect with readers.  More than that, while my now defunct baking biz always received rave reviews, I was unsure if my baking was ready to share with the world.  But, […]

me and my older sister want to own our own bakery when we are older, so everyday we try to make a new cake, right down the recipe and take a picture of it for the future. We have been looking all day for a good simple recipe, and instead of finding 1 we found 5 right here on your blog. 🙂 Thank you for all of the good recipes, we are also needing a recipe for a homemade fondant that is easy to work with and that tastes really good, we have tried the marshmallow fondant and it was ok, any ideas?

Hi, Jessica and Brittany! Thanks so much for checking out my blog. 🙂 I think it is beyond awesome that you both love baking so much! Whenever I try a new recipe (or make up one of my own), I write down the recipe in my cake journal, too. Also, I make notes in my journal about different things that I liked and didn’t like about each cake/filling/frosting, and I’ll write down different ideas about what to do differently next time. You might want to give this a try, too. 🙂 It really, really helps me.

Ahhh…fondant recipes. There’s a lot of good ones out there. I started out using marshmallow fondant, too, since it’s fairly inexpensive to make. These days, I mostly use Toba Garrett’s rolled fondant recipe, which I’ve tweaked a little bit. You can find this recipe in her book “Wedding Cake Art and Design.” Maybe your local library has a copy of this book that you could check-out. She’s an amazing cake decorator! Also, if you haven’t visited cakecentral.com, it’s a terrific resource for bakers/decorators. There’s lots of recipes (including fondant) on that site. Hope that helps! Good luck and have fun! 🙂
